Spiritual Transmission and Master Teachers

The Eastern religions have a deep understanding of the important relationship between a Guru/Master and Chela/Student.   It is accepted that by devoting oneself to a spiritual Master, by falling in love with this Master and by following the directions this Master gives her/his students the students will harmonize and synchronize with the Master’s mantle and a flow of enlightened consciousness will flow to the student.  This relationship extends beyond the grave and many millions of devotees feel spiritually fed by a ‘departed’ Master.

Shankara with his disciples

The closest we have in the West to this understanding of the transmission of spiritual consciousness is found in various Christian sects.  Of course the Master that Christians feel a connection with had departed this physical plane of existence 2000 years ago and any attempt to insert a Master/Guru as representative and channel through which Christ Consciousness can be made accessible to devotees is highly suspect!  And yet Jesus himself addressed this dynamic and encouraged us to take advantage of this relationship of Teacher and Students.

John 15:4-5

King James Version

Abide in me, and I in you.As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

The idea that Christ Jesus is a vine from which we as branches spring forth and from which we derive our life sustenance is the Guru/Chela relationship.  This is as clear a depiction of the way the spiritual consciousness of a Master is shared with and conveyed to the devotee as can be had.

But how do we connect? How do we realize our relationship as ‘branches’ of this Vine?

John 15:13-15

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

The condition of our ‘friendship’ with this Master of Masters is that we do what we are directed to do and that in so doing we become the repository of “all things [He] has heard of [His] Father”.  In other words by obeying what we are given to do by this Teacher we align ourselves with His mantle and everything that He knows and is conscious of is made available to us!  Not too shabby huh?!  But what is it that we are being directed to do by this Teacher?

John 13:33-35

33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

34 Anew commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

So now we have it!  The secret to synchronizing andharmonizing with the Mantle of our Master and thereby becoming the ‘branches’through which the Life-Essence of the Vine flows.  Pretty simple.

But here is where it gets tricky.  Jesus does not want our devotion!  He does not want us to be His students.  He understands His role in this relationship of Teacher/Master/Guru to his followers.  The goal is not to become attached to the Teacher but to learn of the Teacher’s Teacher. The Master’s Master.

Matthew 19:16-18

16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do,that I may have eternal life?

17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God:

And here we have a clue; “Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is God.”  Here we have a Master Teacher who has been groomed over many lifetimes for this very task of becoming Christ on earth and connecting all of humanity, past, present and future as well as the very matter of earth itself, with the Cosmic Vibration and Consciousness of Living Light, who says “why are you calling me good? Only God is good.”

In this statement we get a glimpse into the nature of a true Spiritual Master.  He tells us to become His friends by obeying him and that in so doing we will become extensions of His consciousness and yet reminds us that He too is a branch on yet another Vine!  And that it is this Vine, the Cosmic Solar Being we call The Christ, that is what we need to be synchronized and harmonized with so that Christ Consciousness can be realized by all here even while in human form.  Paul underscored this when he told the Philippians:

Philippians 2:5-6

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God?

If then we are following the directions of our Teacher and are the channels through which Christ Consciousness flows and in which It resides, are we not also “equal with God”?  Do we not become extensions of that Teacher and that Teacher’s Teacher? And as extensions are we not also teachers?  For a Teacher’s job is to provide the spiritually charged environment in which others can unfold and emerge, in which they can remember who they are and who they have always been and to connect them to the Source.

In this day all Master Teachers/Gurus must consciously connect their students to the Source and make sure the students know that it is NOT the Teacher who feeds them and that the Teacher is but a channel through which the One calls all to remembrance.

It shouldn’t be a huge leap to make from this understanding of a relationship with an Ascended Master to the Eastern understanding of the importance of a Master in earthly form, for being a Channel for Living, Conscious Light is the destiny of any who follow the Great Christos, the Being in whom we all live and move and have our Being.
